Pennsylvania Reporter

The Pennsylvania Reporter is a reprint of the Pennsylvania Supreme, Superior and Commonwealth cases from the Atlantic Reporter 2d series (1938-present). Superior and Commonwealth Court no longer publish official reports and so only the Atlantic Reporter 2d/Pennsylvania Reporter is the source for those two courts' cases.

One does not cite to the Pennsylvania Reporter, but to the Atlantic Reporter volume and pages found in the Pennsylvania Reporter.

Pennsylvania State Reports

This is a set of official court reports begun in 1845 and still being published today. The early volumes may be cited by the name of the reporter (e.g., Barr, Harris, Wright, etc.). Since the mid 1970's, the official reports have been published by West Group, and there is no difference between the official reports and the unofficial Atlantic Reporter 2d series. Cite these reports as Pa., e.g., Com. v. Gwynn, 555 Pa. 86 (1998).

An early set of Pennsylvania Reports (60 volumes) compiled by various reporters (Dallas, Yeates, Binney, etc.) contain the Supreme Court cases from 1754 to 1845. Cite these reports by the name of the reporter, e.g., 1 Dall. 1.

In late nineteenth century, there are five additional sets called the Miscellaneous State Reports (Grant, Pennypacker, Sadler, Walker and Monaghan) that collect Supreme Court cases not published in the official Pennsylvania State Reports because of a statutory limitation on the number of volumes published. Cite these reports by the name of the reporter, e.g., 2 Grant 1.

Cases since 1997 can be found at www.aopc.org.

Pennsylvania Superior Court Reports

The official court reports for the Superior Court began in 1895 and ended in 1997, volumes 1 to 456. Cited as Pa. Super. Since 1997 cases are found only in the Atlantic Reporter 2d series.

After 1997 cite to Atlantic Reporter2d and give reference to Superior Court e.g. Com. v. Aziz, 724 A2d 371 (Pa.Super. 1999)

Cases since 1997 can be found at www.aopc.org.

Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court Reports

The official court reports for the Commonwealth Court began in 1970 and ended in 1995, volumes 1 to 168. From volumes 126 to 168, the cases were published by West Group and are identical to the unofficial Atlantic Reporter 2d series. Since 1995 cases are found only in the Atlantic Reporter 2d series.

Cite as: 168 Pa. Comwlth. 1.; Harvard Blue Book cites as 168 Pa. Commw. 1. After 1995 cite to Atlantic Reporter2d and give reference to Commonwealth Court e.g. Duquesne Light Co. v. Com. 724 A2d 413 (Pa.Cmwlth. 1999).

Cases since 1997 can be found at www.aopc.org.

Pennsylvania District and County Court Reports
